Sonic Electric Toothbrushes for Teeth Whitening

Updated on November 15, 2013

Why Use a Sonic Electric Toothbrush for Teeth Whitening?

Let's get serious.

People want white teeth.

Doesn't matter what the person's age - white teeth are fashionable. They look healthy, like a tan. Only unlike a tan, white teeth CAN be healthy.

So, how to you go about whitening your teeth without paying a dentist big bucks or spending your hard-earned money on a teeth whitening system (a one-shot deal)?

Whiten Your Teeth Every Day the Easy Way

Do you brush your teeth every day? Let's hope so, especially if you socialize on a daily basis. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste that will brighten your teeth every day, not just the one shot deal in the dentist office or with a system.

But let's not use an ordinary toothbrush and toothpaste. Instead, use a specially designed sonic electric toothbrush and special toothpaste. I'll explain later why I opted for a SONIC electric toothbrush.

This article shows you what the marketplace has to offer for sonic electric toothbrushes that claim to whiten teeth.

Please be aware that any electric toothbrush will likely whiten your teeth to some degree. The manufacturers of the toothbrushes I'll talk about in this article claim their products whiten your teeth faster and make them whiter than ordinary electric toothbrushes. Also, the actual shade of white you can achieve depends on many factors, including your age, the condition of your teeth, and what you eat, drink, and smoke (if you smoke).

Sonic Toothbrushes for Whitening - Great Gift Idea!

Just by the way - if you have a family member or friend who is insistent on whitening his/her teeth, gift or buy them one of these toothbrushes. It stops the whining about yellow teeth AND you look like a hero! In fact, if YOU are the whiner, buy yourself a new sonic toothbrush for whitening and stop whining.

What's the Advantage of a SONIC Electric Toothbrush?

Simple answer - sonic toothbrushes perform the most work in the shortest amount of time.

For the purpose of clarification, the term "sonic toothbrush" is equivalent to "sonic electric toothbrush." An "electric toothbrush" does NOT use sonic technology.

In fact, electric toothbrushes vibrate an average of 5,000 strokes per minute. Sonic toothbrushes are up to 7 times faster. Refer to this article Mouth Health: Are Sonic Toothbrushes Really Better for details.

So yeah, sonic toothbrushes do a lot more work than just plain electric ones. Does that make sonic toothbrushes better than electric? When it comes to teeth cleaning and whitening, more is better - up to a point. Enamel removal is not the goal.

Two minutes using a manual or electric toothbrush is much less efficient than two minutes using a sonic toothbrush.

Selecting Sonic Toothbrushes for Teeth Whitening

There are hundreds of different types of electric toothbrushes ranging from $5 and up to over $200. For this article, my list includes those having the following characteristics:

  1. Sonic electric toothbrushes by top manufacturers.
  2. Rechargeable toothbrushes
  3. Toothbrushes for which the manufacturers make a "teeth whitening" claim. This claim is either in the name given to the product or boldly displayed in the manufacturer's description.

The following section shows the list I came up with by applying this criteria. Author's Note: In case you're wondering why anyone would spend her time mucking around for teeth whitening toothbrushes - I did it because I want a new one. Mine gets handed down to a family member (with new brushes) and I get another one. Quite frankly, the original was pricey, and I was looking for a better price with the same quality plus teeth whitening. We'll see in the next few sections.

And the Winners Are . . .

I applied the criteria spelled out in the last section - sonic rechargeable toothbrushes with a manufacturer's claim for teeth whitening. The results are as follows:

  1. Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean
  2. Philips Sonicare HX6731/02 HealthyWhite
  3. Oral-B Pulsonic Sonic Toothbrush
  4. Water Pik Sensonic Professional Toothbrush

See the table below for details.

And because I decided to get one for myself, I perused the online reviews. People were most pleased with the second toothbrush on my list.

Since I already have this brand and have no issues with it (except for price), I'm likely biased.

Now I want one that specializes in tooth whitening AND provides excellent oral hygiene. So, I'm buying this one: Philips Sonicare HX6731/02 Healthywhite Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

The Selection Table

Toothpaste is Important . . .

There are quite a few choices for teeth whitening toothpastes. If you look at forums where dentists comment, they seem to be divided about using whitening pastes for sonic toothbrushes. Some say these pastes are too harsh and some say it's okay to use them every day.

Not only do I use a whitening paste daily, but based on an article I read recently, I use the top-rated paste. AND I bought it on sale - 1 for each bathroom.

The top brands use essentially the same ingredients for whitening. See what you think - click here to read "The Top 10 Teeth Whitening Toothpaste Products."
